Fiji’s Tourism Future: New Hotel Hopes to Boost Economy

The tourism industry remains a crucial component of Fiji’s economy, significantly contributing to the growth of the gross domestic product and enhancing employment opportunities, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad.

Professor Prasad made these remarks during the inauguration of the first phase of the $75 million Hilton Garden Inn Hotel construction in Suva. He emphasized that while the government is actively promoting more economic diversification, tourism will continue to play an essential role in the future.

He highlighted that the introduction of the Hilton Garden Inn to Fiji’s hospitality sector will further enhance the country’s tourism infrastructure. Prasad expressed gratitude to the Carpenters Group and all those involved in the project, noting that their presence in Fiji for the past 156 years demonstrates their commitment and vision for future developments.

The Carpenters Group operates various businesses, including supermarkets, finance, shipping, and industrial engineering services.

Investment Fiji CEO Kamal Chetty remarked that this new development would help alleviate the accommodation shortage in Suva. He noted the significance of this project in filling the gap for hotel rooms, catering particularly to business travelers. Chetty also mentioned that the project’s progression illustrates confidence in the country’s economy, indicating that it has been in planning for a considerable time and is now actively coming to fruition.
