Fiji’s Tourism Buzz: What Awaits in the Last Quarter of 2024?

The countdown to the end of 2024 has begun, and Fiji’s tourism sector is abuzz with anticipation for various reasons. Following a successful peak season in July that contributed $351 million to the visitor economy, with nearly 100,000 arrivals marking a 5 percent increase from last year, the industry is eager to see the August figures. These numbers could potentially surpass last year’s record earnings and visitor counts.

Over the next few months, the tourism industry will be active with numerous events and initiatives aimed at further growth, reinforcing Fiji’s status as a premier destination in the Pacific, particularly in adventure and nature-based tourism. The tourism calendar is filled with significant conventions, engaging events, trade shows with associated competitions, and global sporting events as the country prepares for the typically wetter and hotter months ahead.

A recent update from Tourism Fiji regarding the Mastercard Quarter 2 Tourism Insights report highlighted the strong attractiveness of Fiji for travelers. The report revealed that Fiji boasts an impressive Product Satisfaction score of 86 percent, exceeding the Pacific Island average of 73 percent. This reflects the high quality of services and experiences provided to visitors choosing Fiji for their vacations.

Despite a Global Satisfaction score around the average at 76 percent, which indicates room for improvement, the high Product Satisfaction score illustrates an ongoing dedication to exceptional visitor experiences, ranging from diverse resort styles to unique cultural experiences. The report also indicates that Fiji’s room rates remain competitive compared to other Pacific Islands, particularly in the 3- to 5-star categories. This affordability coupled with high-quality experiences enhances Fiji’s appeal to a broad spectrum of tourists.

Additionally, the data showed that a significant portion of visitor spending—71 percent—goes towards accommodation, while retail and dining make up the remainder. This presents opportunities to develop areas such as dining and entertainment, allowing businesses to capture a larger share of the spending if they can find the necessary skills to provide expected service and quality.

To address skill gaps, the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) is working to raise awareness and provide platforms for discussion and training. The upcoming HOTEC Competitions, starting next week in Suva and continuing across the country, will showcase skilled professionals in the Chef, Barista, and Cocktail categories, aimed at enhancing service standards in Fiji’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

Continual upskilling of the workforce is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge in the global market. If the industry cannot address the ongoing loss of skills and constant staff turnover, it risks diminishing demand for Fiji as a sought-after destination.

A low Global Satisfaction score indicates challenges related to staff retention and the urgent need for access to upskilling and basic training. The industry is committed to working with local and international training organizations to address these skills gaps and enhance the quality of service.

Upcoming events such as the Tourism Convention, scheduled for September 26-27 in Nadi, will facilitate important discussions among stakeholders about future tourism development and sustainable practices while ensuring that policies align with industry needs.

The HOTEC Trade Show, taking place on October 24-25 at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, has already sold out exhibition space, showcasing the industry’s strong demand for participation. This event will display various local and international exhibitors, emphasizing innovative products and services tailored to improve tourism operations in the Pacific.

Fiji will also host the 2024 Fiji Spartan APAC Championship from November 14-17 at the Aviva Race Course in Sabeto, bringing international attention to the country as a thrilling adventure location. The Spartan Race will attract participants from around the globe in various categories, promoting Fiji’s reputation for adventure tourism.

Fiji’s tourism prominence continues to be recognized globally, recently winning several awards at the 2024 World Travel Awards, including Oceania’s Leading Tourist Board and Oceania’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination. Fiji Airways also garnered accolades for its lounge and inflight magazine, showcasing the efforts of the destination’s teams.

As the year draws to a close, there is optimism about potentially reaching or nearing the milestone of welcoming one million visitors, while preparations are already underway for 2025.
