The tourism industry is a crucial component of Fiji’s economy, playing a significant role in the growth of the gross domestic product and enhancing employment opportunities, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad. He made these comments during the launch of the first phase of the $75 million Hilton Garden Inn Hotel construction in Suva.
Prasad acknowledged the importance of tourism, stating that while efforts are being made to diversify the economy, tourism will continue to be a major contributor in the future. He highlighted that the introduction of the Hilton Garden Inn will bolster the country’s tourism infrastructure.
He expressed gratitude to the Carpenters Group and others involved in the project, emphasizing the company’s long-standing presence in Fiji, which has lasted 156 years, as a sign of their commitment and vision for future developments.
Kamal Chetty, CEO of Investment Fiji, remarked that the new hotel would help alleviate the accommodation shortage in Suva. He noted the importance of this opening in fulfilling the demand for lodging, particularly for business travelers, and emphasized it as a reflection of confidence in the economy. Chetty indicated that the project had been in development for some time, making its progress particularly encouraging.
