Australia remains Fiji’s largest source of tourism, contributing over 45 percent of total visitor arrivals. According to the Australia Fiji Business Council (AFBC), nearly 450,000 Australians traveled to Fiji last year, marking a 5 percent increase from the previous year. This trend highlights the ongoing appeal of Fiji for Australian travelers and reflects the strengthening tourism ties between the two nations.

In total, Fiji welcomed a record 982,938 tourists by air in 2023, along with 81,854 cruise ship passengers, exceeding its target of 966,930 visitors. The growth indicates a 5.7 percent increase from 2022, showcasing the successful recovery of Fiji’s tourism sector post-pandemic. The AFBC noted that during 2023, over 10 million Australians embarked on short trips for leisure and business, with about 4.2 percent, or approximately 434,000, choosing Fiji as their destination.

Notably, after reopening its borders in late 2021 and early 2022, more than 11 percent of Australian travelers opted for Fiji while other popular destinations remained inaccessible. Visitor statistics reveal that Australians accounted for 455,228 arrivals, making up 46.3 percent of the total, while New Zealand followed with 225,928 arrivals.

Fiji’s successful tourist recovery also brought significant economic contributions, with Australians spending around $3.7 billion in Fiji from July 2023 to June 2024. This positioned Fiji as an appealing option for Australians looking to travel. The AFBC acknowledges that with ongoing favorable conditions and strategic initiatives, Fiji is poised to attract even more Australian visitors in the years to come.

The positive outlook for Fiji’s tourism industry indicates steady economic resilience, with an estimated 3.0 percent economic growth last year attributed primarily to tourism. Analysts expect that ongoing efforts to strengthen ties and introduce new flight routes will further bolster growth, solidifying Fiji’s status as a premier destination in the South Pacific.

In summary, Fiji’s tourism sector is showing a promising trajectory, particularly driven by Australian visitors, which not only enriches the local economy but also fosters goodwill between the nations. Positive trends indicate a hopeful future for both tourism and economic collaboration in the region.
