The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is ramping up its focus on road safety by taking serious measures against reckless drivers who contribute to accidents. From January to December 9, 2024, the LTA has revoked 62 driver’s licenses and suspended an additional 21 for dangerous driving behavior.

Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the importance of education in this initiative, revealing that 107 counseling sessions have been conducted at various LTA branches. As a result of these sessions, the Authority issued 1,366 first warnings, 297 second warnings, and 155 final warnings to offenders. This approach aims not only to impose penalties but also to teach drivers about their responsibilities on the road and discourage unsafe driving habits.

In addition to the license cancellations, Rokosawa mentioned that 39 client IDs are on hold due to serious offenses, with one case currently under audit. He underlined the LTA’s zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and reinforced the commitment to making roads safer for everyone.

“The actions taken are not just punitive but are designed to save lives and prevent accidents. By holding offenders accountable, we can significantly reduce the number of preventable traffic incidents,” Rokosawa stated. He added that each canceled or suspended license represents one less potential danger on the roadway, urging every driver to recognize the considerable responsibility they hold for their own and others’ safety.

This steadfast approach reflects a hopeful future for road safety in Fiji, as the LTA continues to prioritize the well-being of all road users. By fostering a culture of accountability and education, the Authority not only aims to deter reckless driving but also to nurture a community of responsible motorists dedicated to creating safer roadways.
