A significant milestone in Fijian sports history unfolded recently when referee Torika Delai officiated her first match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. By taking charge of the Group C clash between Norway and Ecuador, Delai became only the second Fijian referee to participate in a FIFA World Cup event, following in the footsteps of trailblazer Finau Vulivuli, who previously officiated at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2016.
Delai’s journey to this prestigious platform is a testament to the dedication of the Fiji Football Association (FA) in promoting female officials within the sport. Her appointment is not just a personal achievement but a reflection of years of hard work, persistence, and commitment to excellence, emphasized by Fiji FA President Rajesh Patel. He expressed immense pride in her accomplishment, which he believes serves as an inspiration for young Fijians, especially women aspiring to thrive in sports.
“This is a proud day for Fiji and for women who aspire to reach great heights in sport. Torika’s selection at such a high level is proof that dedication can lead to extraordinary opportunities,” Patel stated.
At 35, Delai’s accomplishment marks her as a prominent figure in Oceania’s football community, representing the ongoing efforts to empower women as referees and leaders. She has risen from officiating at local competitions to regional tournaments, and now to the global stage, symbolizing hope and a beacon of inspiration for future generations of referees.
Delai was part of an esteemed panel featuring assistant referees Allys Clipsham from New Zealand and Natalia Lumukana from the Solomon Islands, forming an all-female officiating team from the Pacific, indicative of progress in gender representation in sports. The recognition she has gained signifies a positive trajectory for women’s inclusion in football officiating, inspiring countless aspiring referees who can look to her remarkable rise as proof of what is possible through determination.
The Fiji Football Association’s commitment to nurturing female talent is evident in its strategic plan to uplift women in sports, hoping to create more pathways for aspiring referees and athletes. Torika Delai’s journey is monumental not only for her individual success but also as a promising sign of the bright future ahead for women in sports across Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
