The Powerade-sponsored national torch relay commenced today in Levuka, Ovalau, marking the beginning of a vibrant season leading up to the prestigious Coca-Cola Games. The official lighting ceremony took place yesterday at the Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Fiji office in Suva, signaling an exciting journey ahead for athletes across the nation.
Over the upcoming five weeks, the torch will be carried through various regions, culminating at the Fiji Finals scheduled for April 24-26 at HFC Bank Stadium. Ryan Mahoney, the commercial director for Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Fiji, emphasized that the torch relay symbolizes not only the commencement of the games but also the dedication and resilience exhibited by athletes from different backgrounds across Fiji. This year celebrates 50 years of the Coca-Cola Games, a momentous occasion reflecting the event’s rich legacy and the inspiring stories of past participants.
The Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA) leader Biu Colati expressed gratitude towards sponsors including Fiji Gas, Digicel, and others for their vital support. Additionally, Digicel’s manager Satish Narain announced cash sponsorships for standout athletes in each grade, further incentivizing the young competitors to strive for excellence.
A total of 130 students from 50 secondary schools will participate in the torch relay, with the journey highlighting community involvement and engagement in athletics. The final leg will be ceremoniously carried out by the defending champions Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School and Marist Brothers High School.
The torch relay and the upcoming Coca-Cola Games are not only moments of celebration but also serve to inspire future athletes, encouraging them towards perseverance and high achievement in sports. As Fiji prepares to honor its athletic talent, there’s a palpable excitement that resonates through schools and communities, fostering a spirit of unity and purpose across the nation.
