Tevita Boseiwaqa has been identified as the highest-paid municipal leader in Fiji, serving as the acting chief executive officer (CEO) of the Suva City Council. This information was disclosed in Parliament by the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, who outlined the salaries of acting CEOs across various municipal councils in the country.
Boseiwaqa’s annual salary is reported to be $159,386, a figure established by the Higher Salaries Commission. This came to light during an inquiry regarding the salaries of acting CEOs in Fiji, highlighting the financial structures governing municipal leadership.
Currently, Suva City Council, alongside Nasinu Town Council and Tavua Town Council, operates under special administrators who are fulfilling the roles of acting CEOs. The payment for these positions is determined by adding 95% of the difference between the salary of the Special Administrator and the base salary of the CEO.
For comparison, Felix Magnus, the acting CEO of Nasinu Town Council, earns $79,549.80 annually, while Sireli Korovulavula of Tavua Town Council is currently receiving an annual allowance of $12,000, awaiting full salary approval from the Higher Salaries Commission.
Across these three councils, a combined total of $183,055.66 is being allocated towards the salaries of acting CEOs, with an additional $26,252 designated for allowances that cover official vehicles, mobile phones, internet connectivity, and travel expenses related to official duties.
Minister Nalumisa further noted that there have been no new positions created for executive chairs in municipal council structures, as such roles need approval from the ministry, which is not currently granted.
Overall, this update sheds light on the financial commitments of municipal leadership in Fiji, illustrating the structured approach to salary determination amid ongoing governance transitions. What’s encouraging is that through these adjustments and evaluations, the councils are focusing on enhancing operational transparency and fiscal responsibility.
Summary: Tevita Boseiwaqa has been named the highest-paid municipal leader in Fiji, with an annual salary of $159,386 as the acting CEO of Suva City Council. The report highlights the salaries of acting CEOs across various councils, indicating a focus on structured governance and fiscal responsibility.
