Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed that he is unaware of the reasons behind the recent decision to place Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Fiji Corrections Commissioner, on leave. This announcement was made earlier today.
During a media briefing, Mr. Rabuka stated that he would only gain insights into the situation after receiving information from the Secretariat of the Council of Chiefs (COC) following a briefing with the Minister for Justice, which is anticipated to occur later today. “I will be informed of the reason,” he noted, indicating that the leave may be extended to allow for preliminary internal investigations. These investigations will inform a recommendation from the Minister to the COC.
Dr. Nakarawa’s leave is said to be linked to an ongoing inquiry by the Ministry of Justice into reports regarding serious incidents and possible violations within the Fiji Corrections Service.
This matter highlights the importance of accountability and transparency within the public sector, as the government seeks to address any issues within its ranks. As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that thorough assessments will lead to improvements in the Corrections Service, ultimately benefiting the broader community and upholding standards within the justice system.
The developments surrounding this issue will be followed closely, with more information expected to be reported in The Fiji Times tomorrow.
