Fiji’s Timber Treatment: What You Need to Know!

The Ministry for Forests and Fisheries is overseeing the operations of timber treatment plants nationwide, as mandated by the Forest (Timber Preservations) Regulation 1992. In response to comments made by Opposition MP Premila Kumar regarding the Ministry’s role in the status of timber treatment in Fiji, Minister Alitia Bainivalu highlighted that there are currently 29 registered timber treatment facilities, with 14 licensed to operate this year.

Minister Bainivalu explained that these facilities are licensed on an annual basis and are subject to quarterly monitoring. This monitoring process evaluates operator competency, health and safety protocols, and quality control. Monthly timber samples are tested to assess the concentration and penetration of preservative chemicals, ensuring compliance with established standards.

The primary objective of treating timber with chemicals is to safeguard it from insect infestations and fungal decay, thereby enhancing its durability and longevity in various applications. Minister Bainivalu emphasized that untreated timber, including pine, can be unsuitable for specific uses, particularly in exposed or ground contact situations.

She noted that chemical treatment significantly prolongs the service life of timber, especially for species with lower natural durability, such as some local timbers and major plantation varieties. However, she pointed out that treatment is not mandatory. Certain untreated timber species like pine may still be appropriate for specific applications, particularly in non-load-bearing roles and environments protected from ground contact.

The Minister also mentioned that some native timber species possess naturally durable heartwood that does not require treatment. Consumers have the option to choose between treated and untreated timber based on their specific needs. She clarified that the relevant legislation comes into effect only when a timber processor decides to proceed with treatment, thereby ensuring adherence to specific quality and safety standards.
