The FIJI Water Flying Fijians showcased a remarkable resilience in the second half, overcoming Spain with a final score of 33-19 during their third match in the Autumn Nations Series.
Initially, Spain put in a commendable effort, leading 10-7 at halftime thanks to a penalty try and a successful penalty kick from flyhalf Gonzalo Lopez, in addition to a try from Fiji’s Ponipate Loganimasi, converted by Caleb Muntz.
Spain extended their lead early in the second half when Lopez added three more penalties, pushing the score to 19-7. However, Fiji regrouped effectively, starting their comeback with a try from Sireli Maqala in the 54th minute.
Continuing their momentum, hooker Sam Matavesi scored the third try just five minutes later, followed closely by a fourth try from Captain Waisea Nayacalevu. Debutant Setareki Turagacoke capped off Fiji’s impressive performance with another try in the 69th minute, while Muntz successfully converted three opportunities.
Looking ahead, the Mick Byrne-coached team is set to focus on their final match of the season against Ireland, scheduled for next Sunday at 3:10 am at Aviva Stadium. This upcoming match presents an opportunity for the Flying Fijians to further establish their strength as a competitive team on the international stage.
