Fiji’s first computerized shirt factory, Mark One Apparel, commenced operations in Suva in November 1989. The $2 million facility was projected to produce 10,000 shirts weekly, generating around $2 million in annual export revenue.
During the factory’s official opening, the then Minister of Finance, Josevata Kamikamica, highlighted the government’s support for the garment industry, emphasizing its role in creating jobs and attracting foreign revenue. He commended the company for offering on-the-job training to approximately 100 employees.
Visitors were given a tour of the factory located in the Bhindi Industrial sub-division in Vatuwaqa, Suva. Managing Director Mark Halabe informed attendees about the factory’s advanced computerized design, pattern grading, and marking systems.
Halabe stated, “We have also installed two of the most modern embroidery machines, which will be available to garment manufacturers in Suva. These will enhance the quality of exported garments and boost export sales.”
