Tevita Ikanivere, co-captain of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, has been awarded the title of 2024 Jonah Lomu Male Player of the Year at the Annual Pasifika Hall of Fame ceremony held in Auckland, New Zealand. This prestigious recognition came during a celebration that also honored Manusina Samoa’s captain, Masuisuimatama’ali’i Tauasa-Pauaraisa.
Ikanivere, who hails from Nukuni, Ono-i-Lau, has been an integral part of the Fijian Drua since its inception in 2019, playing a key role in the team as it competed within the Australia National Rugby Championship. Since joining the national team, the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, in 2020, he has accumulated 21 caps and scored six tries, demonstrating his significant contributions on the field.
However, fans of the Drua will be disappointed as Ikanivere will miss the upcoming round nine Super Rugby Pacific match against the Highlanders in Dunedin due to an injury. In his absence, Mesulame Dolokoto and Iosefo Masi have been named co-captains for the match, ensuring the team’s leadership remains strong as they prepare to face this challenging opponent.
Ikanivere’s recent accolade not only highlights his personal achievements but also underscores the rich talent and potential present in Fijian rugby. His leadership has been influential in fostering growth within the team and inspiring a new generation of players. The Drua’s commitment to nurturing local talent and their promising roster constructs a hopeful outlook for their endeavors in the upcoming matches. As they aim to maintain their competitive spirit and strive for success, the community is eager to support their journey on the rugby stage.
