The Fijian government, through its Ministry of Trade, is collaborating with the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF) to develop a sustainable funding model that aligns with the long-term vision for the country’s telecommunications sector. This initiative is part of TAF’s recently launched strategic plan for the years 2025 to 2029, which aims to overcome current funding challenges and meet ambitious objectives.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, emphasized the government’s commitment to properly equipping TAF to fulfill its regulatory role effectively. “We recognize the financial pressures these regulatory bodies face and are dedicated to ensuring that TAF receives the necessary resources to thrive,” he stated. He acknowledged that a well-supported regulatory framework is crucial for promoting a competitive and vibrant telecommunications marketplace.

In addition to funding, Mr. Kamikamica highlighted that TAF needs stability and reliability in its budget allocations, which are essential for addressing the sector’s evolving demands. TAF is also tackling operational challenges, including the backlog in audits and annual reports, with a goal to resolve these by the close of the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

To enhance its operational efficiency, TAF is implementing new corporate policies, including a comprehensive Finance and Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual and a modern Financial Management System.

This proactive approach by both the government and TAF reflects a commitment to improving the telecommunications landscape in Fiji, paving the way for innovation and improved services for the public. With the establishment of a robust funding model and new operational frameworks, the future of Fiji’s telecommunications industry looks promising.

In summary, the collaboration between the Fijian government and TAF aims to secure financial resources and operational efficiency, fostering a stronger telecommunications sector that can adapt to ongoing challenges and advancements.
