Empower Pacific has raised alarms over the growing number of referrals involving young mothers who are grappling with limited family support and psychological stress coupled with the fear of societal judgment. This concern comes after reports highlight 489 cases of teenage pregnancies recorded in the first half of the year, with even young girls under 15 affected. Reshmi Singh, a counsellor, underscored the multiple challenges faced by teen mothers, such as financial struggles, societal stigma, and the risk of dropping out of school.

Singh points out that despite ongoing advocacy and awareness programs, many young mothers continue to struggle with obtaining basic support. She explains that a significant number of young individuals lack access to clear, accurate, and age-appropriate information about relationships and reproductive health. Cultural and religious sensitivities often lead to avoidance of conversations about sex, further isolating young mothers.

Teenage mothers frequently find themselves alienated, falling out of the education system, and grappling with the psychological impact of being labeled due to the persisting stigma around teenage motherhood. Medical Services Pacific’s Clinical Manager, Sereana Bulivakarua, emphasizes the necessity for comprehensive sex education, advocating for stronger referral pathways and collaboration to assist teenage mothers in accessing help without fear of stigma.

Fiji’s teenage pregnancy issue is part of a broader concern that includes societal pressures leading to impulsive decisions by young women, sometimes resulting in desperate measures, as highlighted by various community and religious leaders. Cases have been reported where newborns were abandoned at educational institutions, raising urgent calls for community support to prevent young mothers from feeling isolated and resorting to such drastic actions.

Community leaders and advocacy groups continue to stress the need for comprehensive sexual education in schools, reinforcing awareness of reproductive health and contraceptives among young people. Efforts to foster an empathetic community response, breaking the stigma around teenage pregnancies, aim to build a more supportive environment for young women. As Fiji tackles these challenges, the collective hope is for a nurturing and informed community that aids in reducing teenage pregnancies and supports young mothers in making informed decisions.
