Pacific Polytech has made significant strides in addressing workforce gaps in Fiji, particularly in the realm of technical education, according to Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua. Speaking at a recent graduation ceremony in Labasa for 97 graduates, Mr. Tikoduadua highlighted the institution’s pivotal role in filling the void left by the lack of technical colleges in the region. He emphasized, “The professions taught at Polytech are the backbone of our nation, the homes we live in, the infrastructure we rely on.”
The institution has been instrumental in providing practical education that greatly contributes to both employment opportunities and economic growth in Fiji. The hands-on training curriculum at Pacific Polytech reflects this promise, with 80% of learning at the certificate two level being practical, and 60% at the certificate four level. Mr. Tikoduadua praised the graduation of 1,991 students who have successfully completed various micro qualifications since the institution’s inception, many of whom have already begun contributing to the economy across different sectors.
Furthermore, exciting developments are on the horizon for Pacific Polytech, with the announcement of new training hubs being established in Lami, Sigatoka, and Nadi. Discussions are also underway for a specialized hospitality training center aimed at further enhancing skills in this vital sector. “This is the start of something much bigger and it is exciting to see the transformation taking place,” said the Defence Minister, underscoring the necessity of accommodating the growing demand for skilled workers.
Overall, the advances made by Pacific Polytech are paving the way for a brighter future, providing individuals with opportunities that empower them and promote economic stability for the community. As Fiji continues to evolve its educational framework, the emphasis on technical vocational training as a crucial part of national development remains clear, illustrating a commitment to fostering a skilled and capable workforce.
