Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has celebrated Fiji’s collaboration with Google, labeling it a “milestone for technology and a giant leap forward in the digital economy” for both Fiji and the wider Pacific region. During the groundbreaking ceremony for Google’s multi-million-dollar ICT facility in Natadola, Nadroga, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the project’s transformative potential, which is aimed for completion by late 2026.
He remarked that this new infrastructure would establish Fiji as a key hub for digital connectivity within the Pacific. The facility will host Viti Levu’s second cable landing station, enhancing the resilience of the internet and aiding Fiji’s shift towards a digital economy. “This is an investment in connectivity, people, and progress,” he stated.
The project includes advanced data servers, power systems, and a new cable landing station that will facilitate connections between Fiji and major global hubs, such as Los Angeles. Google’s vice-president of Network Infrastructure, Brian Quigley, described the facility as an emblem of innovation and economic resilience for the Pacific.
This initiative not only serves technological advancements but is also projected to create over 3,600 jobs and contribute approximately $574 million (USD$250 million) to Fiji’s GDP by the year 2030, according to a report by Access Partnership. It is expected to significantly enhance Fiji’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) sectors, along with sectors like healthcare, tourism, and education.
Furthermore, Mr. Rabuka pointed out that Google’s investment signifies that Fiji is prepared for business and ready to emerge as a center for innovation, entrepreneurship, and global trade. In addition, Google aims to utilize its AI capabilities to tackle climate challenges, including employing its Flood Hub tool to foresee floods up to seven days in advance, aiding governments and communities in their preparedness efforts.
This partnership marks a hopeful future for Fiji, promising to bring substantial economic growth, create jobs, and enhance overall digital infrastructure, showcasing the nation’s readiness to embrace modern technology and global opportunities.
