Telecom Fiji and the Fiji Police Force have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at elevating public safety through the innovative Safe City Project. This initiative is designed to integrate advanced surveillance and networking technologies to create safer communities in Fiji.

This week, a formal agreement was signed to facilitate the rollout of high-speed fiber connectivity and closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems specifically along the Suva to Nausori corridor. All surveillance footage will be continuously monitored at the Fiji Police Command Centre, located at the Central Police Station in Suva.

Telecom Fiji’s CEO, Mr. Charles Goundar, emphasized that this milestone project transcends mere technology—it symbolizes a commitment to building safer environments for all Fijians. Mr. Goundar remarked, “We are proud to partner with the Fiji Police Force to deliver a solution that not only improves public safety but also lays the groundwork for smarter cities.”

Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, highlighted the importance of incorporating digital infrastructure into modern policing. He noted that real-time monitoring and expanded coverage capabilities will enhance their ability to deter crime and facilitate swift responses to incidents.

The Safe City Project is poised to serve as a pilot for a more extensive implementation across Fiji, with the goal of establishing a cohesive national public safety network. This configuration not only aims to bolster immediate security measures but also reinforces a broader vision of community safety through technological advancement.

Similar recent initiatives illustrate a growing commitment to modernize the Fiji Police Force’s operations, including proposals for enhanced surveillance networks and drones for aerial monitoring. Such improvements signify a significant step toward a forward-thinking approach to public safety, aiming to empower the police and foster a safer environment for citizens.

As these strategies evolve and are implemented, there is a hopeful outlook for a marked decrease in criminal activity across Fiji, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for all residents. The increased use of technology in policing reflects a proactive stance that underscores the importance of community safety and trust in law enforcement.
