Fiji’s two leading teacher unions, the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) and the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA), are urging educators to adhere to established grievance procedures regarding salary delays and related concerns. This appeal follows a social media post that drew attention to delayed salary payments for recent teachers.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has also highlighted the importance of following the correct channels for grievances. FTU General Secretary Muniappa Goundar emphasized that while such issues have persisted for years, it ultimately lies with school heads to ensure timely processing of documents essential for salary payments. He noted that salary delays typically occur during the transition from submission at the school level to the ministry’s verification.

Goundar cautioned against expressing frustrations on social media, recommending that educators channel their concerns through proper mechanisms and seek representation from their unions if needed. This sentiment was echoed by FTA General Secretary Paula Manumanitoga, who emphasized patience and adherence to proper processes.

Consistent communication from the Ministry of Education regarding the processing of salary upgrades is critical. Reports have surfaced highlighting significant delays, particularly for teachers who upgraded their qualifications but have not seen corresponding salary increases. The FTU has called for prioritized attention to address pending payments, urging the ministry to promptly allocate necessary funds to rectify these setbacks.

Despite ongoing challenges, inclusive dialogues between the unions and the Ministry offer a glimmer of hope for resolution. If properly managed, these discussions could not only alleviate educators’ financial concerns but also enhance the quality of education throughout Fiji.

The situation underscores the vital role teachers play in shaping future generations and emphasizes the necessity of fair compensation and structural support for educators.
