The increasing trend of students arriving at school while under the influence of drugs in Fiji has emerged as a pressing human rights concern for educators, according to Pravesh Sharma, chairperson of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC). In an interview with The Lens@177, Sharma highlighted that the welfare of teachers is now a significant human rights issue.

Sharma pointed out the challenges teachers face in managing classrooms where students may be intoxicated, especially given the prohibition against corporal punishment. He emphasized the need for effective strategies to support educators in such situations, noting the rising incidence of drug use among students.

To address these concerns, Sharma suggested that student counselors and teachers play a pivotal role in offering support and solutions. He stressed that the focus should not solely be on helping students but also on safeguarding the mental health and well-being of teachers. Managing the complexities of a classroom, especially with a high number of students, can be incredibly stressful.

Sharma urged the government, teacher unions, school management, and parents to acknowledge and prioritize the mental health of teachers. He emphasized that while the hard work of teachers should be commended, it is equally important to ensure they receive the necessary support to perform their duties effectively.

This situation calls for a community-wide commitment to create a healthier educational environment. By working together, society can not only protect the rights of students but also uphold and promote the welfare of teachers, maintaining a balanced and productive learning atmosphere for all involved.

In summary, the FHRADC is advocating for a holistic approach to education in Fiji that includes the well-being of both students and teachers, suggesting collaboration among all stakeholders to address the rising issue of drug use in schools.
