Fiji’s Teacher Training Revolution: New Interviews Ahead!

The Ministry of Education in Fiji plans to reinstate interviews for Year 13 students seeking enrollment in teacher training programs. This initiative will be in partnership with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS).

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro expressed enthusiasm about this opportunity for aspiring teachers to influence the education system in Fiji. He emphasized the growing need for qualified educators and noted the importance of selecting candidates who are not only academically capable but passionate about teaching.

This initiative is part of the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which aims to enhance collaboration among educational stakeholders, ensuring that graduates of teacher training programs are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in classrooms.

Radrodro stated, “We are committed to fostering a robust educational environment, and our teachers are at the heart of this mission.” The goal is to create a vibrant educational landscape in Fiji, where dedicated individuals can inspire future generations of learners.

He also mentioned the current prioritized teaching areas due to a shortage of qualified professionals, which includes subjects such as primary education, special and inclusive education, and various science and arts disciplines.

For those interested in teacher training, the deadline for online applications to TSLS is January 31, 2025. Scholarship programs will cover a range of educational disciplines from Early Childhood Education to Secondary Education, ensuring that there are ample opportunities for students based on their interests and the nation’s needs.

The Ministry of Education, in coordination with TTIs, will conduct two rounds of interviews for prospective students, with specific dates set for each batch. Eligible students will receive notifications about interview dates and locations via email and phone.

This initiative not only aims to address the current teacher shortage but also fosters a sense of commitment and dedication among future educators, ensuring that Fiji’s educational landscape continues to develop positively.
