The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has initiated a series of public consultations across Fiji, beginning this week in Labasa. The goal is to gather feedback and address the concerns of both stakeholders and the general public regarding the country’s taxi permit regulations and operations.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that these consultations are crucial for evaluating and enhancing the policies related to taxi permits and the Open Taxi Ranking System. He acknowledged the dynamic nature of the transportation sector and the need for meaningful input from the public and relevant stakeholders.
These consultations present a vital opportunity for everyone involved in the taxi industry, from permit holders to passengers, to voice their opinions and contribute to the future of taxi operations in Fiji. Participants will have the chance to discuss various topics, including the current challenges of the permit framework and possible improvements to better meet public transport needs.
Each session will feature panel discussions with representatives from key organizations such as the Ministry of Local Government, the Ministry of Transport, and the Fiji Roads Authority, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of the issues at hand. According to Rokosawa, the insights gained from these consultations will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of Fiji’s taxi industry, particularly regarding the potential lifting of the current pause on new taxi permits.
Furthermore, the CEO reiterated the importance of a participatory approach, encouraging taxi permit holders and the general public to engage directly with officials. The feedback gathered will aid in establishing a regulatory framework that is fair, accessible, and aligned with the needs of Fijians.
The consultations aim to evaluate the LTA’s policies thoroughly, ensuring they can adapt to future challenges within Fiji’s transport system. The LTA invites all taxi operators, industry representatives, and the public to present their views and submit written feedback during these sessions.
Sessions are scheduled as follows:
– Northern Division: Monday, 28th October 2024, at the Salvation Army, Labasa
– Western Division: Tuesday, 29th October 2024, at the RSL Hotel Hall, Lautoka
– Eastern Division: Wednesday, 30th October 2024, at Nausori Village Community Hall, Nausori
– Central Division: Thursday, 31st October 2024, at FTA Hall, Knollys Street, Suva
This initiative showcases the LTA’s commitment to fostering open dialogue with the community, which can ultimately lead to a more efficient and responsive taxi system in Fiji. By encouraging active participation, the LTA is taking a significant step towards addressing the needs and expectations of Fijians, promoting a positive change for the taxi industry.
