The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has underscored the necessity for public service vehicle drivers, particularly those catering to tourists, to treat passengers with utmost respect. This statement follows a viral incident involving a tourist who alleged she was overcharged by a taxi driver and subsequently faced verbal abuse after deciding to switch to another taxi.
Irimaia Rokowasa, the CEO of LTA, made clear that all taxi drivers operating in Fiji, including those servicing popular tourist areas like Denarau, must adhere to the LTA’s Code of Conduct. This code encompasses standards related to driver behavior, customer service, vehicle maintenance, and compliance with regulations.
Rokowasa emphasized a zero-tolerance stance towards inappropriate conduct, asserting that passengers, particularly visitors, deserve professional and courteous treatment. He indicated that any verified complaints regarding overcharging, discrimination, or abuse would be taken seriously, possibly leading to penalties like Traffic Infringement Notices, suspension or cancellation of drivers’ licenses, and even legal prosecution in severe cases.
This incident reflects broader concerns regarding passenger safety in Fiji’s transportation sector, reigniting discussions similarly sparked by recent alarming behaviors exhibited by some drivers. Reports of misconduct in the taxi industry have drawn attention to the urgent need for stricter enforcement and regulations to ensure both local and tourist safety.
In response to these events, Rokowasa encouraged members of the public to report incidences with detailed accounts to facilitate prompt action. By fostering a culture of accountability and respect, there is hope for improvements in the service quality of Fiji’s taxi drivers and for the restoration of trust within the tourism sector. As the community rallies for accountability, it is expected that effective actions will enhance the safety and reputation of Fiji’s transportation services.
