The Fiji Taxi Association has raised significant concerns with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) regarding the operation of private vehicles as illegal taxis. In a recent letter addressed to the LTA Chief Executive, the association notes that there is a serious lack of enforcement against these illegal operators, despite LTA officers supposedly being aware of the situation.

The association highlights that current laws prohibit private cars from functioning as taxis and is calling for immediate action to address this issue. They also counter a recent statement made by the LTA Chief regarding the availability of taxis at night, arguing that the presence of unauthorized vehicles is undermining the services provided by licensed taxi operators, especially during nighttime when many of these illegal vehicles are active.

This situation mirrors similar concerns voiced by taxi associations in other regions of Fiji, such as Lautoka and Labasa, where illegal “pirate taxis” have been increasingly operating, particularly during events like the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North. These unregulated operators not only diminish the earnings of licensed taxi drivers but also pose safety risks to passengers who may unknowingly rely on their services.

Sujit Sharma, secretary of the Labasa Taxi Association, has voiced his worries about the rising number of these illegal taxis, largely attributed to increased car ownership. He emphasizes that these unauthorized vehicles lack the regulated fare meters required for legitimate taxi services, further endangering passenger safety.

There is hope, however, as the ongoing dialogue between taxi associations and local authorities reflects a communal effort to address these challenges. Increased awareness and law enforcement could pave the way for improved transportation safety and security in the community, benefitting both taxi drivers and passengers alike.
