Concern is growing over proposed electricity tariff increases by Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL), which community leaders warn could heavily impact low-income households. Mehboob Rahman Ali, the deputy chairman of the District Advisory Council for Naitasiri province and a Justice of the Peace, addressed the issue at a recent submission to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), emphasizing the need for government-supported solar energy initiatives.
Mr. Ali urged the FCCC to carefully consider the economic implications of the tariff hikes, stating that while residential electricity rates may seem manageable, the increase in costs for commercial and industrial users could ultimately lead to higher prices for everyday goods. He pointed out that if businesses face increased power expenses, they are likely to pass those costs onto consumers—particularly affecting the economically disadvantaged.
Ali proposed that the government explore options for subsidies or grants that could assist families in adopting alternative energy solutions, such as solar systems. “In the future, the Government should look at providing subsidies or grants to help people manage these costs,” he stated, highlighting that such solutions are vital for households struggling with rising living expenses.
The council remains against any further increases in electricity rates, noting that current prices are already substantial. Mr. Ali remarked, “If the previous rates were already high, any further increase makes it very expensive for us.”
He also encouraged public participation in FCCC consultations, which have seen low turnout in attendance. Emphasizing the importance of community engagement, Mr. Ali urged residents to share their feedback and experiences with the Consumer Council and FCCC personnel. He believes that voicing concerns is crucial for catalyzing change in how electricity rates are structured, particularly in relation to the impacts on low-income earners, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups.
This call for action reflects a growing movement towards sustainable energy solutions and community resilience against economic challenges. With a supportive framework from the government, solar energy could play a significant role in alleviating financial burdens on families while contributing to a more sustainable future.
