Fiji’s Talei Holmes Gears Up for World Cup Qualifying Showdown

Fiji Bulikula captain Talei Holmes has expressed that the players have forged a strong bond during their short time together. She emphasized the importance of this connection, noting, “We found a bond already off the field doing devotions and team meetings.”

Holmes highlighted the strengths of their upcoming opponents, the Cook Islands, mentioning their power in the middle and the threat posed by Kiana Takairangi at full-back. She acknowledged the need for the team to improve their ruck play and maintain a solid defense.

Reflecting on her leadership role, Holmes said, “I’ve represented the country twice before and being captain this year is a very special moment for me as I definitely didn’t think this would come this soon.” She expressed her enthusiasm about leading the team, stating, “I’m very excited and I can’t wait to lead the girls.”

This Pacific Championship is particularly meaningful for Holmes, as it marks her first visit to the country. She shared her excitement about witnessing younger players emerging in the sport, saying it means a lot to her, and she looks forward to playing for them.

Holmes is committed to the team’s goal of qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. “It would mean everything to the country if we qualify,” she noted, assuring that they are preparing thoroughly for their match on Saturday.

Two weeks ago, Holmes was part of the Cronulla Sharks team that narrowly lost 32-28 to the Sydney Roosters in the NRLW grand final.

In other news, Fetu Samoa will be observing the upcoming match between Bulikula and the Cook Islands Moana, as they compete for a place in the World Cup qualifying final after defeating Tonga 30-16. The winner of the Fiji-Cook Islands match will head to Auckland to face Samoa on November 2 for a chance at a World Cup spot.

Tonga and the loser of Saturday’s game will be eliminated from contention, but the runner-up in Auckland will still have a shot at the 2025 World Series to compete for the final spot in the 2026 World Cup. The Auckland victor will also face the third-placed Pacific Cup team at CommBank Stadium on November 10 for promotion to the top tier next year.
