Hansel McCaig, a gold medallist from the Pacific Games, has achieved an impressive new national record in the men’s 100 metres medley. He clocked a remarkable time of 57.31 seconds while competing at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships held in Budapest, Hungary last week.
McCaig was part of a trio of Fijian swimmers at the championship, alongside Marseleima Moss and David Young, who is based in the U.S. Notably, Young also made headlines by setting a national record in the men’s 50m butterfly during the same event.
In addition to the swimming accolades, Fiji Swimming’s president, Lucy Erasito, along with Eugene Panuve, presented their strategic plan to World Aquatics for the next four years. This plan was the product of a nine-month collaboration with the International Federation through a mentorship program aimed at aligning Fiji’s swimming direction with global trends.
The initiative included workshops with Fiji Swimming stakeholders to sharpen the organization’s visions, missions, and values, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing competitive swimming in Fiji. The program not only provided challenges but also offered valuable perspectives on effective teamwork, revealing shared hurdles faced by national federations of varying sizes and structures.
Fiji Swimming expressed gratitude to both the previous and current boards for their contributions towards the organization’s evolution, emphasizing their dedication to prioritizing athletes above all.
This news reflects a time of growth and achievement for Fiji’s swimming community, showcasing the potential for continued success on the international stage. With the strategic initiatives in place and the recent record-breaking performances, there is hope for a bright future for Fijian athletes.
