Team Fiji’s swimmers have made headlines at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau, capturing a total of nine medals, which includes the nation’s first two gold medals of the competition. Samuel Yalimaiwai ignited celebrations by winning gold in the men’s 50-meter breaststroke, finishing with a national record time of 27.74 seconds. In his words, Yalimaiwai expressed pride in representing Fiji and attributed his victory to months of rigorous training and the support of his family and coach.
Following in his footsteps, 16-year-old Kelera Mudunasoko, who was also the flagbearer for Team Fiji, secured gold in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke, clocking a new national record of 32.62 seconds. Mudunasoko’s win came as she added to her medal tally, having previously earned a silver in the 200m breaststroke.
In addition to these stellar performances, David Young won silver in the men’s 50m breaststroke, while Hansel McCaig added bronze medals in the 100m butterfly and 50m backstroke. Marseileima Moss also contributed with a silver in the women’s 800m freestyle, and the relay teams received silver in two events: the men’s 4x100m freestyle and the mixed 4x50m medley.
Team Fiji’s standout performances reflect a broader trend of promising talent within the nation’s swimming community, echoing sentiments from prior competitions where athletes have steadily broken records and achieved medal glory. The success at the Pacific Mini Games serves not only as recognition of individual talent but as a source of pride and inspiration for the entire Fijian community. With more events scheduled, there is great anticipation and hope for continued achievements as the athletes pursue their commitments on this international platform.
