The Fijian government has announced a significant boost for sugarcane farmers, providing a $5 per tonne bonus to 3,208 farmers who have increased their cane production during the 2024 season. Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, highlighted that the total disbursement amounted to approximately $596,701.05 for around 119,340.21 tonnes of sugarcane, emphasizing the acknowledgement of farmers’ hard work and commitment.

This initiative is part of the broader Farmers Incentive Program, aimed at not only encouraging higher production levels but also enhancing the sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry. In addition to the performance bonuses, the government has allocated further financial assistance through the Manual Harvesting Program. A total of 7,786 farmers received $3 per tonne for 723,877.78 tonnes of cane harvested manually, amounting to $2,171,633.34. This support is designed to ease the financial pressures associated with labor-intensive harvesting methods, especially amid increasing labor costs.

Singh expressed optimism about the future of Fiji’s sugar sector, projecting an increase in total cane production from last year’s 1.6 million tonnes to a target of 1.8 million tonnes this year, with aspirations of reaching 3.5 million tonnes within the next five years. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of farmers, recognizing them as the backbone of the sector and asserting that these financial measures reflect ongoing dedication to boosting livelihoods and productivity.

The government’s consistent support resonates with previous initiatives, including a recent rise in prices paid to farmers, which drove the prices to historic highs. These efforts signify a strategic approach to securing the future of agriculture in Fiji, enhancing both immediate economic relief for farmers and paving the way for long-term stability within the sugarcane industry.

Overall, the initiative reflects a collaborative effort between the government and farmers, reinforcing the critical role of the agricultural sector in Fiji’s economy while also fostering hope and resilience amid the challenges faced.
