The Fijian government has unveiled an important initiative to support sugarcane farmers by granting a $5 per tonne bonus to 3,208 farmers who have successfully increased their cane production during the 2024 season. Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, indicated that the total financial support for this initiative amounts to approximately $596,701.05, benefiting around 119,340.21 tonnes of sugarcane. This program acknowledges the dedication and hard work of farmers in the sector.

This financial boost is part of the wider Farmers Incentive Program, which not only aims to encourage higher production levels but also seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry. Alongside the performance bonuses, the government has rolled out additional assistance through the Manual Harvesting Program. Under this program, 7,786 farmers received $3 per tonne for the 723,877.78 tonnes of sugarcane harvested manually, totaling $2,171,633.34. This financial support is crucial in alleviating the financial burdens associated with labor-intensive harvesting, particularly as labor costs continue to rise.

Singh expressed a hopeful outlook for the sugar industry, forecasting an increase in total cane production from last year’s 1.6 million tonnes to a targeted 1.8 million tonnes this year, with aspirations to reach 3.5 million tonnes within the next five years. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the farmers, recognizing their essential role in the industry and stating that these financial measures aim to enhance the livelihoods and productivity of sugarcane growers.

The government’s ongoing support also builds on previous initiatives, such as the recent hike in prices paid to farmers, leading to historic highs. These combined efforts illustrate a strategic vision for the future of agriculture in Fiji, which not only provides immediate economic relief for farmers but also lays the groundwork for long-term stability in the sugarcane sector.

Overall, this initiative represents a strong partnership between the government and the farming community, emphasizing the vital importance of the agricultural sector in Fiji’s economy while fostering a sense of hope and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges.
