Fiji’s Sustainable Tourism Initiative Set to Transform Lives

A new initiative focused on sustainable tourism, which could benefit over 60,000 people, is set to be launched in Fiji, World Bank President Ajay Banga announced yesterday. This program, developed in partnership with the Fiji Government, is one of several topics Mr. Banga is discussing with stakeholders during his visit.

“The World Bank is very interested in collaborating with Fiji on various issues. One significant topic we are addressing here is healthcare and its associated challenges,” Mr. Banga shared with media following his visit to the Nuffield Health Clinic in Tamavua.

He emphasized that while healthcare and climate resilience are crucial, another key area of focus is diversifying Fiji’s economy. This diversification aims to create job opportunities for young people, encouraging them to remain in the country and harness their enthusiasm to foster local growth.

“Realizing this goal requires a vibrant private sector. Today, we’re engaging with private sector representatives to explore how we can assist them and collaborate with the government to enhance their activities within the country,” he added.

Mr. Banga mentioned that the new sustainable tourism development scheme, in partnership with the Fijian government and the private sector, is expected to provide opportunities for approximately 60,000 people when fully operational. The scheme is anticipated to launch either this month or next month.
