Fiji’s Suspended Corrections Chief: Salary Controversy Amid Abuse Investigations

Suspended Fiji Corrections Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa is continuing to receive his full salary while investigations into allegations of abuse of office remain ongoing. Justice Minister Siromi Turaga confirmed this development, stating that the suspension was enacted under Section 137(4) of the Constitution and was advised by the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) pending further inquiry.

Minister Turaga explained that the allegations against Mr. Nakarawa have necessitated a formal investigation, leading to the appointment of Assistant Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi as the Acting Commissioner of Corrections. This is to ensure the functional operation of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) while the investigations unfold.

The background of the investigation includes concerns that Mr. Nakarawa appointed his wife, Vakaloloma Nakarawa, as a senior medical officer within the FCS, which raised ethical questions about potential conflicts of interest. This appointment coincided with the unjust termination of the FCS’s previous senior medical officer, prompting the Fiji Medical Association to voice significant concerns over these actions.

Despite the challenges presented by this situation, Minister Turaga reinforced the notion that establishing a tribunal requires careful consideration, hinting at the complexity and cost involved in such processes. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about addressing the issues at hand, as these investigations present a valuable opportunity to enhance accountability and governance within the Fiji Corrections Service.

In light of past scrutiny within the FCS, including previous commissioners dealing with serious legal issues, this current investigation might pave the way for critical systemic reforms. The overall focus is on reinstating public confidence through improved transparency, governance, and the integrity of the corrections system in Fiji. Encouragingly, Minister Turaga emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a culture of accountability and meticulous governance in public institutions.
