Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has revealed that 92 terabytes of data are consumed monthly for accessing pornographic materials or adult-related content in Fiji. In his Ministerial Statement, Kamikamica highlighted the significant presence of adult content, which is consuming a considerable share of network traffic.
He noted that over the past three months, roughly 626 terabytes of data were downloaded, placing it among the top 10 categories of data traffic usage. This amount is equivalent to approximately 100 million books.
Kamikamica stressed the substantial impact of adult content and pornography on network usage, stating, “The numbers do not lie… we can be assured that the industry is huge.”
In response to this growing issue, the Deputy Prime Minister announced that the Cabinet has approved the establishment of a National Taskforce aimed at addressing pornography and understanding its societal risks in Fiji. The task force is charged with providing recommendations to effectively tackle these challenges.
Kamikamica emphasized that this initiative is not just a symbolic action, but reflects the Coalition Government’s commitment to making a change. He described it as a crucial step toward safeguarding the community and protecting its most vulnerable members.
Additionally, he mentioned that the government is preparing a Cabinet paper for Fiji to join the WeProtect Global Alliance, a global taskforce dedicated to combating child sexual abuse online, through the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Women and Children.
