Fiji’s Surprising Data Habit: A Deep Dive into Adult Content Consumption

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has revealed that 92 terabytes of data are utilized each month to access pornographic or adult-related content in Fiji.

In his Ministerial Statement, Kamikamica emphasized the growing presence of adult content, highlighting that it accounts for a significant amount of network traffic. He noted that in a span of three months, approximately 626 terabytes of data were consumed, placing it among the top 10 data traffic uses.

To put this into perspective, Kamikamica mentioned that 626 terabytes is roughly equivalent to 100 million books. He reiterated the magnitude of the industry, stating, “The numbers do not lie… we can be assured that the industry is huge.”

In response to this issue, the Deputy Prime Minister announced that the Cabinet has approved the establishment of a National Taskforce aimed at tackling pornography and understanding the societal risks associated with it in Fiji. The task force will also offer recommendations for effectively addressing these risks.

Kamikamica emphasized that this initiative is not merely symbolic but represents the Coalition Government’s dedication to taking meaningful action. He described it as a significant step towards protecting communities and safeguarding vulnerable citizens.

Moreover, he mentioned that the government is in the process of finalizing a Cabinet paper to join the WeProtect Global Alliance, which focuses on combating child sexual abuse online, with support from the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Women and Children.
