Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica revealed that in Fiji, approximately 92 terabytes of data are consumed monthly for accessing pornographic materials or adult content. In his Ministerial Statement, he noted that such content occupies a significant portion of the nation’s network traffic.
Kamikamica shared data indicating that over three months, around 626 terabytes of data were downloaded, placing it among the top ten categories of data usage. He highlighted that this amount of data is comparable to roughly 100 million books.
“The statistics clearly show the substantial presence of adult content and pornography, which consume a significant amount of network traffic. The figures are undeniable, confirming the vast nature of this industry,” he remarked.
The Deputy Prime Minister mentioned that the Cabinet has authorized the establishment of a National Taskforce focused on addressing pornography. This initiative aims to better understand the societal implications of pornography in Fiji and to formulate effective recommendations to mitigate associated risks.
Kamikamica emphasized that the task force represents more than just a symbolic action; it reflects the Coalition Government’s strong commitment to take meaningful steps. He stated that it is a proactive measure to protect communities and the most vulnerable citizens.
He also indicated that the government is preparing a Cabinet paper through the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Women and Children to join the WeProtect Global Alliance, which is a global taskforce aimed at combating child sexual abuse online.
