Recent low-pressure systems have led to significant rainfall, resulting in widespread flooding in various regions, particularly affecting numerous sugarcane farms. Despite sugarcane’s natural resilience, challenges such as soil erosion and potential outbreaks of pests and diseases following the floods can present serious threats to the crop.
In response to these challenges, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has activated its senior researchers and field surveillance teams to assess the flooding’s impact on sugarcane fields. SRIF’s chief executive officer, Dr. Vinesh Kumar, shared that eight teams have been dispatched across Fiji’s Western and Northern areas to evaluate the damage and provide practical recommendations to affected farmers.
Dr. Kumar highlighted the critical nature of these assessments, stating, “Our priority is to help farmers manage the immediate effects of the flood and offer them solutions to mitigate future risks.” He reassured farmers of the institute’s commitment to offering support and guidance during this turbulent time.
The teams are collaborating closely with local stakeholders to collect vital data on crop losses and soil conditions, as well as identifying necessary immediate measures to prevent further damage. They are also gathering soil and plant samples to monitor for potential pest and disease outbreaks, which are often a risk after flooding.
Additionally, SRIF is conducting verifications for farmers who have applied for the ratoon management grant, ensuring that help reaches those in need swiftly. “It is crucial that the support reaches those most affected, and we’re working hard to make sure the aid is distributed efficiently,” Dr. Kumar added.
The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji remains dedicated to maintaining the resilience and sustainability of the country’s sugarcane industry. The institute will continue to provide regular updates on its findings and subsequent action plans to keep all stakeholders informed.
In summary, SRIF is actively addressing the challenges posed by recent flooding to ensure that farmers receive the necessary support during this crisis. This collaborative approach and commitment to ongoing assistance highlight a proactive strategy aimed at bolstering the sugarcane industry’s resilience against such environmental challenges. With focused efforts from SRIF, there is a hopeful outlook for recovery and sustainability in Fiji’s vital agricultural sector.
