The Sugar Industry Tribunal has officially set the schedule for the 2025 sugarcane crushing season in Fiji, with the Lautoka Mill slated to initiate operations on June 11. Following this, the Labasa Mill will commence on June 17, and the Rarawai Mill in Ba plans to start on June 24. This timeline is seen as promising for the industry as conditions such as mill readiness and supportive weather are anticipated.

Vimal Dutt, the Chief Executive of the Sugarcane Growers Council, expressed optimism regarding production, crediting increased planting efforts and enhanced crop care among growers. He emphasized the importance of the government’s commitment, highlighted by a special cane payment of $7.6 million, which guarantees a payment of five dollars per tonne for growers. Additionally, a fourth cane payment of $17.03 is expected soon, boosting the total earnings for farmers to approximately $91.66 per tonne.

Minister Charan Jeath Singh has indicated that the industry is well-prepared for efficient operations, citing the successful progress of mill maintenance programs. Stakeholders are hopeful that this season will restore faith in Fiji’s sugar sector, which has faced various challenges in recent years.

These developments are encouraging as they not only signify financial support for growers but may also enhance productivity across the sector. The collaborative spirit among stakeholders underscores a commitment to improve the agricultural landscape, addressing past difficulties and fostering resilience within the industry. With a well-coordinated approach, there is potential for revitalization and growth within Fiji’s vital sugarcane sector, bringing hope for a fruitful 2025 season.
