Fiji is currently entering its dry season, with variable rainfall anticipated across sugarcane regions. The Northern Viti Levu and parts of the Northern Division are expected to receive some rain, while other areas are likely to see low rainfall levels.
According to the latest Fiji Sugarcane Rainfall Outlook released by the Fiji Meteorological Service, rainfall is expected to increase starting in October. The forecast predicts a 75 percent chance of experiencing at least 400 to 600 mm of rainfall in sugarcane-growing areas of Viti Levu from October to December 2024. Meanwhile, the sugarcane belt areas in Vanua Levu could see 600 to 800 mm of rainfall.
Farmers who cultivate cane during September and October are advised to commence land preparations and order fertilizers to ensure they are applied on time. The service recommends using only Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) certified seedcane for planting to promote good germination and ensure plants are disease-free. Additionally, it advises against planting unapproved varieties.
The Fiji Meteorological Service is urging farmers to take weather forecasts into account when planning their harvesting and planting schedules.
