Recent low-pressure systems have resulted in heavy rainfall, leading to widespread flooding across many regions, including significant inundation of sugarcane farms. Although sugarcane plants generally exhibit resilience, challenges such as soil erosion and the potential for pest and disease outbreaks post-flooding present serious threats to the crop’s health and productivity.
In response to this crisis, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has dispatched senior researchers and field surveillance teams to assess the flooding’s impact on the sugarcane fields. Doctor Vinesh Kumar, the chief executive officer of SRIF, announced that eight assessment teams are now active in the Western and Northern regions of Fiji. Their objective is to gauge the damage extent and provide immediate, practical recommendations to affected farmers.
Kumar highlighted the critical nature of these assessments, noting, “Our priority is to help farmers manage the immediate effects of the flood and offer them solutions to mitigate future risks.” He reaffirmed SRIF’s commitment to supporting farmers during this challenging time.
The assessment teams are collaborating closely with local stakeholders to collect vital data on crop losses and soil conditions, as well as determining any necessary immediate measures to prevent further damage. They are gathering soil and plant samples to monitor for potential pest and disease outbreaks that may follow the flooding.
Additionally, SRIF is carrying out field verifications for farmers who have applied for the ratoon management grant, ensuring that much-needed assistance reaches the farmers promptly. Kumar emphasized the importance of ensuring that support is efficiently distributed to those most affected by the flooding.
Through its dedicated efforts, SRIF aims to protect the resiliency and sustainability of Fiji’s sugarcane industry. The organization will provide regular updates on findings and future action plans to keep stakeholders informed throughout this period.
This comprehensive response is a testament to the resilience of the agricultural community in Fiji, and with the support of organizations like SRIF, there is hope for recovery and renewed strength in the sugarcane sector as they address the challenges ahead.
