The Fiji Meteorological Service has announced that significant rainfall is expected across sugarcane belt areas in Fiji from January to April 2025. According to their recent forecast, these regions, which received under 100mm of rain from October to November 2024, are now looking forward to a much-anticipated downpour, with expected rainfall ranging from 250mm to 400mm just in January.

Farmers in areas from Sigatoka to Penang should take proactive measures to prepare for this significant weather event, particularly focusing on maintaining clean drainage systems to avoid possible waterlogging. The Nadi weather office indicates a 75% chance of receiving at least 250-300mm of rainfall in key locations including Olosara, Nadi, Lautoka, Tagitagi, and Labasa. Notably, some areas might see even higher totals, with estimates of 300-400mm specifically in Vunimoli and throughout much of Viti Levu.

Looking ahead to the February to April period, the forecast predicts even more considerable rainfall, anticipated to exceed 800-1000mm in certain regions and potentially reaching 1000-1200mm across other sugarcane belt locations in Viti Levu.

This rainy season coincides with Fiji’s tropical cyclone season, highlighting a potential for low-pressure systems to bring further enhanced rainfall. Farmers are encouraged to take these forecasts into account seriously for their planting and harvesting decisions, aligning their cultivation practices to effectively utilize the influx of moisture.

While the outlook suggests challenges such as the risk of flooding, it also brings hope for rejuvenation of agricultural conditions, contributing to healthy crop yields and replenishment of water supplies essential for farming. This balance is crucial as communities brace for the impending changes in weather while recognizing the vital benefits that good rainfall can bring to the agricultural sector.
