Minister Charan Jeath Singh has announced significant changes in the transportation model for sugarcane in Fiji, declaring that trains will cease operations in some cane-growing regions as trucks take over this essential task. This decision comes in response to requests from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), which indicated that certain areas, including parts of Wainikoro in Vanua Levu, are harvesting insufficient cane to warrant the use of train services.

Despite this reduction in train operations, Mr. Singh emphasized that the railway system in Fiji is still operational in other areas. He noted that there has been an increase in the availability of cage bins—special containers designed to transport sugarcane efficiently and safely. This season, an additional 25 to 30 cage bins have been introduced on top of the 50 that were already allocated to all mills last year.

These cage bins are not only designed to prevent cane from falling during transit but are also recognized for their safety and efficiency, which are vital for supporting farmers in transporting their harvest. Mr. Singh assured farmers that 35 more cage bins would be allocated to the Labasa mill this season to enhance the efficient movement of sugarcane.

This strategic shift in transportation reflects ongoing discussions within the sugar industry regarding infrastructure improvements and logistics management, which have been critical in revitalizing Fiji’s sugar sector. Farmers have expressed optimism about the upcoming crushing season, bolstered by favorable weather conditions and enhanced agricultural practices.

Some analysts believe that despite the challenges faced by the industry, including logistical hurdles, the focus on improving infrastructure and introducing specialized transport methods like cage bins could lead to a more resilient and productive sugar industry in Fiji. This proactive approach aims to support local farmers and contribute positively to the overall economic health of the agricultural sector.
