Fiji’s Sugar Safety Scare: Will Change Finally Come?

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has demanded an investigation into the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) adherence to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations following a serious workplace incident at the Lautoka Mill. An employee sustained injuries after becoming trapped in a conveyor belt on Wednesday, sparking concerns over ongoing safety issues within the corporation.

NFU General Secretary Mahendra Chaudhry criticized the FSC for its response to the incident, alleging that the company did not call for an ambulance or medical assistance when the accident occurred. Instead, after the worker was freed—a process that reportedly took 45 minutes—he was transported to the hospital in discomfort, further highlighting questions about the corporation’s commitment to worker safety.

Chaudhry expressed disbelief over the lack of basic care and comfort afforded to the injured employee, emphasizing that safety at FSC mills has been a persistent issue, with previous accidents having led to fatalities. He reiterated the need for safety guards on machinery to prevent similar incidents and noted employee concerns that OHS inspections are inadequate.

The FSC confirmed the incident and has implemented a 36-hour stoppage of operations at the Lautoka Mill to facilitate investigations and repairs.
