Fiji’s Sugar Locomotive Drivers Under Fire for Kava Scandal

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) locomotive drivers are facing scrutiny due to allegations of misconduct. Reports suggest that some drivers have been consuming kava during their working hours. This concern was raised by local farmers in the Wainikoro Sector of Labasa, who reported the issue to the Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh.

Mr. Singh expressed his disapproval of such behavior, stating that the consumption of kava during work hours would not be tolerated. He emphasized that both his ministry and the FSC would address such instances of misuse. Some farmers have pointed out the possibility that kava consumption may have led to delays in drivers’ trips to Wainikoro for sugarcane transportation.

In addition to this issue, the ministry is currently investigating a tragic accident that occurred in Lausa, Tavua. Mr. Singh is awaiting feedback from the FSC regarding the incident.

To enhance monitoring of locomotive drivers, Mr. Singh has requested that the FSC implement Global Positioning System (GPS) technology in the locomotives. This measure aims to track the locations of both the drivers and the locomotives at any given time. Mr. Singh highlighted the importance of ensuring that locomotives reach interior farms promptly to optimize the sugarcane carting process for mill production.
