A historic payment of $105.08 per tonne, the highest ever recorded in Fiji’s sugar industry, will be issued to cane farmers this Diwali. Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry, highlighted that this significant financial support reflects a strong commitment to the dedication and resilience of every farmer.
Acknowledging the difficulties faced by farmers, Singh noted that the government, under Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s leadership, increased the initial payout by $2.57, resulting in a total rise of $4 per tonne.
“This Diwali, we are fulfilling our promise to support farmers, easing their burdens, and celebrating their daily contributions to Fiji,” Singh stated. He emphasized that this unprecedented payment illustrates the Coalition Government’s commitment to ensuring a flourishing future for the sugar industry while strengthening the livelihoods of farmers and acknowledging their efforts.
