Fiji’s sugar industry is experiencing a significant boost in production, with the three sugar mills processing a total of 164,807 tonnes of cane by July 7, representing an increase from 139,059 tonnes during the same period last year. Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, expressed optimism about the current milling season, noting that this 18.5% rise in crushed cane is beneficial for communities reliant on cane farming and may enhance Fiji’s sugar export prospects.

Despite the potential for minor disruptions as the season progresses, Singh reassured that the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has skilled personnel ready to tackle any challenges. He emphasized the necessity of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure timely harvesting and delivery of cane to the mills, paving the way for increased income in cane belt communities.

Further highlighting the government’s commitment to the agricultural sector, Minister Singh mentioned plans to visit farming communities to discuss optimal utilization of grants and subsidies allocated to support sugar production as outlined in the national budget approved recently. This ties into ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency across the sector, building on prior significant investments exceeding $18 million aimed at improving mill infrastructure and reducing downtime.

These developments echo Singh’s earlier forecasts that suggested a promising outlook for the sugar industry, driven by favorable weather conditions and concerted governmental support. Stakeholders are hopeful that this year’s initiatives might restore confidence and stimulate growth within Fiji’s essential sugarcane sector, providing a brighter future for farmers and communities dependent on this vital industry.

The unyielding support from the government and the proactive strategies being deployed signal a commitment to addressing past challenges, making this a pivotal moment for the sugar industry to regain its vigor in the coming years.
