The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, is participating in the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar in London from November 26 to 29, 2024. This year’s seminar focuses on the theme “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy.”
During the seminar, Minister Singh took the opportunity to engage with various international companies to enhance Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) presence in the global market. Notably, one significant meeting occurred with Tate and Lyle, part of the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group. Their discussions centered on the importance of sustainability in global market practices, a factor increasingly demanded in international trading.
The historical context of the meeting is noteworthy, as Tate & Lyle was once the largest importer of Fijian sugar during the favorable periods of preferential pricing agreements with the European Union (EU). This revived dialogue aims to reestablish and strengthen ties that could benefit Fiji’s sugar industry in a modern, sustainable framework.
This engagement illustrates Fiji’s commitment to adapting and thriving in the global market, emphasizing sustainability and potential partnerships that could revitalize the sugar industry in the Pacific nation.
By focusing on sustainability, Fiji is positioning itself to meet present and future market demands, fostering hope for a resurgence in the sugar industry that could bring economic benefits and enhance Fiji’s global trade relations.
