Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, is currently participating in the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar in London from November 26 to November 29, 2024. This year’s seminar is themed “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy,” highlighting the industry’s shift towards more sustainable practices.
During the seminar, Minister Singh has engaged with several international companies to fortify relationships for the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) in the global market. A notable meeting took place with Tate & Lyle, a subsidiary of the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group. The conversations revolved around pursuing sustainability within the global sugar market, reflecting a growing emphasis on environmental concerns and sustainable practices in international trade.
The discussions also acknowledged the historical significance of Tate & Lyle as Fiji’s largest sugar importer during the advantageous period of preferential pricing agreements with the European Union. This connection may provide a foundation for revitalizing trade relations, potentially benefiting Fiji’s sugar industry in a competitive global landscape.
In summary, Minister Singh’s participation at the ISO events signals a proactive approach towards revitalizing Fiji’s sugar industry through sustainable market practices and renewed partnerships. The emphasis on sustainability could pave the way for innovative solutions that strengthen Fiji’s position in an evolving international market while ensuring the country’s sugar sector remains viable and competitive.
