The Fijian government has announced plans to enhance support for middle-tier sugarcane farmers, aiming to assist them in becoming more competitive and sustainable businesses. The Sugar Minister, Charan Jeath Singh, has outlined a strategy focusing on farmers who produce between 100 to 250 tonnes of sugarcane annually, recognizing their significant potential to contribute to the national sugar production goals.
Singh revealed ambitious plans aiming to increase sugar production by 200,000 tonnes over the next five years, with a short-term focus on stabilizing the industry’s output before diversifying into other products, such as ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel. According to Singh, the immediate goal is to improve yield per hectare from 47 tonnes with a target increase of 10% annually. Some farms are already achieving over 70 tonnes per hectare, and research indicates that yields of up to 150 tonnes per hectare are possible.
This announcement aligns with the government’s previous initiatives, including programs to enhance farming practices and subsidy schemes designed to improve the livelihoods of farmers while revitalizing Fiji’s vital sugar industry. Previous discussions pointed out the vital role of efficient practices and the ongoing support needed for productive growers, especially in light of historical production challenges.
Singh emphasized the collaboration with the Sugar Research of Fiji, which aims to bring innovative solutions and make informed decisions to boost the sector effectively. The commitment to modernizing the sugar industry and supporting farmers is not just about enhancing productivity but also about ensuring long-term sustainability, which could lead to a flourishing agricultural environment beneficial for the economy as a whole.
The optimistic focus on empowering middle-tier farmers highlights a broader strategy to enhance the overall agricultural landscape in Fiji, with hopes that these efforts will foster economic stability and growth. By continuing to invest in the sugar industry, the government envisions a healthier agricultural sector that can effectively support its farmers and contribute positively to Fiji’s economy.
