The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning regarding the rising number of intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as both dangerous and criminal.
Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of SRIF, emphasized the severe damage these fires inflict on farmers and the entire sugarcane industry. He stated that setting sugarcane fields ablaze is a serious crime that comes with harsh penalties.
“These actions are not only reckless; they are criminal acts that have significant consequences,” Dr. Kumar remarked. He noted that SRIF has faced considerable losses of critical research data due to these incidents.
This vital data, collected over months or even years, is crucial for promoting evidence-based improvements in the sugarcane sector. Dr. Kumar cautioned that a single act of arson can destroy essential research in moments, hindering progress and adversely affecting the industry’s future.
He called on the public to recognize the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing that arson threatens both the economic stability of farmers and the scientific research vital for the industry’s sustainability and growth.
The SRIF has urged the community to remain alert and report any suspicious behavior to the relevant authorities. “By collaborating, we can safeguard our sugarcane fields, preserve essential research, and ensure the ongoing success of our industry,” he concluded.
