The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is initiating a public consultation today to review the Price Control Order for Mechanical Harvesting Services specifically for Sugar Cane in the Western Division of Fiji. The consultations will take place in key sugar belt locations, starting with Sigatoka and Nadi.

The FCCC seeks to engage with the public to gather insights, suggestions, and feedback on the current pricing order to facilitate a transparent and inclusive review process. “Our goal is to ensure that all stakeholders have the opportunity to express their views as we assess the necessary pricing for mechanical harvesters,” the FCCC stated.

The current control order, which guides pricing for mechanical harvesting services, is set to expire on August 1, 2025. This consultation is part of the FCCC’s broader efforts to enhance competition and address the socioeconomic factors influencing the sugar industry.

Similar discussions in the past have highlighted the challenges faced by Fiji’s sugar sector, such as labor shortages and declining production levels, but also spotlighted the resilience and commitment of farmers and stakeholders toward revitalization efforts. Additionally, there have been ongoing dialogues regarding the exploration of alternative agricultural exports, which could further strengthen the agricultural landscape of Fiji.

The FCCC’s approach to involving the community in shaping policy reflects a hopeful outlook for the industry’s adaptability and sustainability, aiming not just for consumer protection but a thriving agricultural future. Engaging stakeholders early in the process ensures that the recommendations made following these consultations will be well-informed and grounded in the realities faced by those affected by these regulations.
